My mother has been suffering from what seems to be gout or ar thritist. Its hard to tell which because when she take medicines meant for relieving arthritist pains she gets better. Don't get me wrong she is not self-medicating or sorts, we took her to a specialist already and this doctor restricted my mom from eating almost everything she likes and we were left with very limited food choices for herAnyway, while doing a research about which food she can eat and which she could not, we bumped intpo an information that alcohol is good for people suffering from gout or arthritist.My mom barely drinks so I don't see her wanting to start now. As moms we are excited to see our kids go to school but sometimes the kids aren't. How can you your child is ready or just needs more time at a playgrpund to socialize.

Here are some checklist you can use if the child is ready for school and have the sociial skills to last the school year, the more yes you answer the more your child is prepared and ready for school!

1) Can you leave your child without the child being overly upset?
2) Can your child spend extended periods of time away from you?
3) Can you see your child explore and tries new things?
4) Is your child seem to be curious and motivated to learn?
5) Does she put away toys and helps with family chores?
6) Can she face visitors without being overly shy?
7) Can your child stay on task and work independently?
8) Is your child able to finish a task?
9) Can she describe basic emotions and feelings (sad, angry, happy)?
10) Does the child recognize authority?
11) Can your child get along and play cooperatively with other children?
12) Can take care of own toilet needs independently?
13) Do you se your child feling good about self and tasks easily?

This is a sad generation

I feel sad for this generation because of the unsafe feeling they have to encounter everyday of their lives wherever they are. Back in my generation, I can go out and pkay with the kids in my neighborhood with me and my parents feeling safe. I socialize for real and not just online. I don't have to worry about online stalkers and strangers getting easy access on my personal details because we didn't have computers back then. I play real games with real interaction with other kids. We run for real, play hide and seek, conquer an opponents base for real, climb real trees, race bikes for real. We get real dirty in the mud , roll in the grass, get wet in the rain. This generation, experience these things online, in virtual reality, which is really really sad.

I wonder what our generation can do for this generation to get them out if their virtual life? Any suggestions?

On Classes Suspension & Taking Kids To School Or Not On A Bad Weather

Mind you, this only happens in the Philippines. I don't know their policy in other countries but its kinda funny in an ironic way that our country depends on unreliable weather prediction from PAGASA and too late a hero announcement from government school authorities like DepED and CHED for class suspension on a bad weather like this week.

Just today, the Department of Education announced class suspension on afternoon classes after announcing an early dismissal on morning classes in the National Capital Region. It is actually too late, the kids in the morning class braved the bad weather, getting their school bags, notebooks and books, shoes and themselves soaking in the hard rain! The afternoon class kids are already on their way to school and are already wet just the same.

Parents, when it comes to deciding if you are going to send your kids to school or not do you still depend on these unreliable government agencies?

Personally, I don't.

I know better, I know what's best for my kids so I don't wait for them to tell me what to do or not.

Some argue that the kids grades will be affected if I don't send my child to school even if there's no class suspension.

Solution:
1) Get your kids teachers numbers and send them a text message that you won't take your kids to school for such reason. If you see that the weather is so unpredictable to the point of foreseeing it to be a hassle to the kids and you as a parent to send them to school .
2) Ask the teacher via text what will be the agenda in school today (lesson) and if there will be homework so you can tell your child to study this lesson and do his/her homework too.
3) If texting is not an option next time the weather is better, go with your kids to school and talk to his/her teachers and ask for consideration, ask for the lessons the child needs to catch-up with so being an absent won't necessarily affect the kids grades.

I believe that accredited online colleges need to offer more teaching training on matters such as this.

I'm sure you have seen that "Muntik Na" commercial where the kids were almost an honor student but missed that opportunity because he/she is always absent because they are always sick?

On a bad weather like this, its very possible that kids will pick-up viruses that spreads around and eventually get sick. Parents don't want this to happen.

Be the responsible parent. You decide!

I think the price of Php150.00 per pack of 50pc is kinda expensive for a common consumer. But if organic is always expensive, safe and environment friendly so what's a little extra amount for all the good stuff right?

On Jan Jan and Willie Revillame Issue

I think the child rights advocates who filed a case against Jan Jan's parents and Willie Revillame for the Child Abuse issue are going over board. Yesterday, I heard they want to take Jan Jan away from his parents and have him in DSWD custody. Are they insane? Are they human? Where is their heart? Whose cause are they fighting for? Whose right they are fighting for? If they have something against Willie Revillame's show or as a person go attack the guy in any possible way you can, but to go overboard and get a kid away from his parents just to hurt Willie is too much.

If they are really for Jan Jan's sake, instead of taking him away from his parents and give the kid a traumatic experience of having to live in a god forsaken DSWD shelter and being separated from his parents, give the parent and Jan Jan a lasting solution.
1) They can give Jan Jan's parent a stable job or a livelihood that they no longer have to hope that Jan Jan will pull them away from the miserable life they have. They don't need to put the responsibility of raising a well-off family out of Jan Jan being a celebrity.
2) Give Jan Jan a scholarship grant until he finish college so the parents will no longer have to worry about where to get his tuition and that he no longer wishes to be an artista nalang so he can earn a lot of money for his family.
3) Have Jan Jan's parents attend a regular counseling and guidance seminar to keep them on the right track.

Having his parents in jail will not do good for Jan Jan but will cause him more trauma thus not protecting the rights of this child.

Thinks about that!

Status: Happily Married To My SMART BRO

I'm a mom of a child with autism, I try to make a living with my blogs and I'm in a long distance relationship. With this situation I am in I can say that I am married to my computer and my internet connection and I'm not planning to get a divorce anytime soon.

Why should I get a divorce when I'm happily married to my personal broadband connection who's been with me through thick and thin.

On being a mom of a CWA:

My daughter likes to watch Barney and Dora the Explorer. She also loves listening to pop music. Because of my ever reliable internet connection I am able to download Barney and Dora episodes that she likes to watch repeatedly. Her playlist is always updated too because we can upload songs on her iPod right away. I'm also updated of the latest news regarding autism because I'm subscribe to it on Google Alert, my email always tells me when there's a new discovery or news and breaktrhough.

On being a blogger who tries to make a living out of it:

I maintain a significant number of blogs that I used for international paid/sponsored post opportunities, I can say that its my bread and butter now. Because of this I need my reliable internet connection so I can do my blogging and complete my online tasks. If not I don't know how I'm gonna pay for all my bills! I'm sure most of the people who work online knows that intermittent connection or even renting at an internet cafe is not that reliable, convenient and practical if you do it as a living, the cost is more than the return of your investment compared to having your own internet connection.

On keeping a long distance relationship:

In any relationship, personal or online, constant communication is important. My boyfriend and I video chat every day of our lives, night and day, since we declared that we love each other. Without a reliable personal broadband communication I don't think this relationship will last this long. We've been "together" for more than 7 years. Like any "normal" close distance relationship, we've been through many ups and downs "together". When we have problems or we have triumphs to share we talk about it via video chat. We may not be able to touch and feel each other physically, as cliche as it sounds, the heart knows no distance because the internet makes it possible to bridge that gap. My sister was once an OFW and she can attest that a simple video chat eases up her feeling of homesickness. So never under estimate my relationship with my long distance boyfriend. I love him and he loves me. Love knows no boundaries anyway. Thanks to my reliable personal broadband I'm always in-touch with my love from the other side of the planet. :)

Do We Really Need A National Bloggers Association?

Since its not mandatory to join would it discriminate the others who are non-members since you'll be making business dealing formally?
While some bloggers make money from blogging the income stream is not as stable and as regular as someone who is employed and receives regular pay. Having an organization would pave the way for someone to propose mandating tax on bloggers.

One of the episodes at DigitalFilipinoTalks series caught my attention. It was the episode with Tonyo Cruz talking about The Need for a Philippine Bloggers Association.

He said its time for the bloggers in the Philippines to become progressive and become one and be represented by a single and formal organization that will focus on the bloggers right especially with regards to copyright issues, code of ethics, and income sharing since there's an existing informal community/organizations already. In short, he said its high time we set a standard to blogging in the country.

Personally, I am not for this association. I am not for setting a standard in blogging because what makes blogging unique and what attracted me to blogging is that its independent , its free, and a blogger can write whatever he/she thinks without having to worry about a group standard or integrity. Because if we are worried about integrity, integrity is something personal that of the blogger and the or groups of bloggers that makeup a blog . It's up to the feedback of its readers/members to set their own standard, if they dont like it they go it they love it they will follow. If you start setting standards for bloggers/blogging then they will no longer be called bloggers because setting a standard destroys the character of being a blogger.

Another thing I am apprehensive about an association is that it gives room for politics and greed. This is an unavoidable circumstance. I don't want to be represented by a group because as a blogger I am an individual and I love the independence I got from blogging. If you put up this one organization it takes away my independence.

If we really want an organization to fight for our right, in terms of ethics, copy right issues and income, I would rather suggest having a Bloggers Cooperative, where one get to share ideas, skills, and income opportunities. We can have a fund for all bloggers in the country to share and invest. We can continue what we love doing, blogging, without being regulated but are progressive.

I don't want to be represented by a group or by a leader of a group. I want to represent myself personally.

The book 'Inspired' — Berkeley Breathed is the author and illustrator of the book, “Mars Needs Moms.” The story was inspired by a particular moment of disagreement that took place between his son and wife. For the lead character, the book and film adopted the same name as Breathed’s son: Milo.
   According to Breathed: “The movie would not exist if not for a single plate of broccoli left uneaten at the Breathed dinner table on August 10, 2006. That led a real Milo, 5, screaming The Unthinkable at a real mom, leaving her in tears... and leaving me to explain to a stewing son how he might feel if the mother he claimed he didn't love might suddenly disappear via -- I was grasping-- Martians. The book writer is an extra! - Berkeley Breathed and his wife hung out on the movie set a couple of times. Breathed even performed as a body extra on one occasion, standing in as a crowd member.

Bollywood goes to Mars! — On the last day of production, the cast, crew, stunt people, caterers, utility players, filmmakers— essentially everybody— shot a rousing, choreographed Bollywood-style musical performance to the 'Mad Martian Mo-cap Mambo' that Composer John Powell wrote for the moment in the movie when Milo and Gribble interrupt the Hairy Tribe Guys' celebration. The number is featured in the end credits of the film.

Make him fly! — Seth Green spent three-quarters of the movie in a flying harness to simulate low gravity. Joan Cusack also had to perform her surface-of-Mars scenes in a harness alongside Green. “Coordinating the two of them led to a lot of hilarity,” says director Simon Wells.
   To allow Seth to move in low-gravity anywhere in the volume, Garrett Warren and his team devised one of the most complex flying pulley systems ever created for a motion picture.
   The producers wouldn’t let director Simon Wells take a turn in the flying rig until shooting had wrapped. When it finally happened, says Wells, stunt coordinator and second unit director Garrett Warren did his level best to make him motion sick.

Kung-Fu Earthmen — Between takes Seth Green and Dan Fogler would act out slow-motion kung-fu fights—with vocals and sound effects! The head-cam team made them a set of Shuriken (Japanese throwing stars) out of Velcro, which—since the costumes were also made out of Velcro (to attach sensors and telemetry gear)—would stick to the actors.

Alien Connection —Writers Simon and Wendy Wells, married 23 years, have always had an affinity for sci-fi stories. Simon comes from a well-established line of science fiction authors, and Wendy is still hoping to be abducted by aliens.

Make him young! — The magic of performance capture allowed a 35-year-old actor (Seth Green) portray a 9-year-old boy (Milo)!

Wonderful Wives! —Both Dan Fogler and Seth Green got married during the making of the movie, although not to each other.

How To Prepare Your Child On Their First Air Travel

"December 25, 2008 was my daugters first air travel. We went to HongKong Disneyland for Christmas and she enjoyed it much. We were took Cebu Pacific rountrip and everything went well, we left the airport earlier than scheduled and got to HongKong a couple minutes advanced.

Honestly, I was expecting hell. With the high sensitivity to sights, sounds, and smell a child with autism (CWA) has in mind I was imagining how unbearable the sound of the compressed air inside the plane will be to her while we were suspended 300,000 feet above the ground. She might throw the nastiest tantrums out of her frustration.

Thank God everything went well, she did not have any major fuss or bad episodes that will annoy the other passengers.

Indeed preparing my daughter for her first air travel helped heaps that prevented a major tantrum similar to that incident in a U.S. airline where the airplane literally turned around to kicked-out of their plane a mother and her CWA son. The mother was not able to control her son's frustration when a stewardess took his soothing bags and obviously the airline staff were not trained how to deal with such situation. It was really sad air travel with a child with autism can really be a hassle.

Here were the preparations I did to secure our safe and peaceful air travel:

1) Months before our trip we practiced air travel with my daughter by taking her for a ride at the MRT station to simulate the sound and the feel of traveling by air. MRT is faster than the usual taxi, bus or cars and the train is airtight and compressed.

2) I took her to a lot of carnival rides that will simulate speed and height like the roller coaster, octopus, Ferris wheel, and also a lot of impact rides bump car and train rides in case there we experience air pockets will inside the airplane.

3) We practiced her patience and waiting time by taking her with me whenever I go either to pay bills or queue at a grocery store so we can simulate the queuing while at the immigration and other airport procedures.

During the flight:

1) CWA's are very impatient because of their short attention span and their very sensitive senses. It is very important to get their attention and keep them busy and at something or anything that will get their interest.

The magazines in the airplane were something new to her so she was kind of interested with them. I repeatedly browse the magazine with her telling her about the pictures she was looking at.

2) My daughter loves music and that is the only thing that will keep her calm and seated whenever we are traveling. My cellphone was her favorite music player but since cellphones were not allowed while on flight I improvised by singing to her her favorite songs it doesn't matter if some passengers were looking a bit weird or maybe annoyed at me.

3) Junk food is something she really likes and so when the food cart started to move we got her a couple of snack that will last the entire duration of the trip. So while we were browsing the magazine or singing she was munching on her snack.

It was a success. We had a very peaceful trip. The very family oriented passengers at the Cebu Pacific flight we had during our trip last Christmas to HongKong and back also contributed to our relaxed trip. Most of them had their kids with them and so as all parents know we have to anticipate some inconvenience here and there from our kids.

Germs cause sickness. The more germs spread, the more sickness spreads.

In this season of on-and-off rain showers, the effects of germs are easy to see everywhere. And children are taking the brunt of it because their immune systems are not as strong as adults’, making them more susceptible to contagious diseases like colds, cough and flu.

To put a stop to the continuous attack of germs on children, frequent and proper hand washing must become a national habit. But here is where the problem lies. Despite the public’s knowledge of the benefits of hand washing, very few actually take the time to do it. Majority is convinced that covering their mouths with a tissue is enough to stop germs but the truth is, the only way to stop them is to kill them.

Safeguard wants to help champion hand washing and its benefits by convincing Filipinos to stop grabbing just tissues and instead start grabbing hand soap. One of its most recent efforts to forward this cause was the creation of a fictitious tissue brand called Sneeze n Sniffles.

Sneeze n Sniffles look like ordinary boxes of tissue but once opened, they reveal faces of different kids printed on each tissue. The headline simply reads: This won’t stop germs from reaching him/her. The boxes have been handed out at select places for free since December and will be a continuing effort until the end of February.

The hope for this effort is to get more and more Filipinos to start a hand washing habit and therefore stop Filipino children from being attacked by germs and sickness.

Since the SOS program started in the country, there is over 1,223 kids who have become integrated into the society with 807 of them still living in the eight SOS Children's Villages in the country.

Each mother will live with an average of 10 children whom they will raise as their own within a village of eight to 14 houses. Biological siblings will be kept within the same house.

No To Kids? WTF!

Singapore just issued a ban on children on all their restaurants on a weekdays I heard there were other countries who issued the same ban and want to extend that ban not only on weekends but FOREVER? including public places. WTF!

I heard the news over the radio the other day and found some info in CNN but I was too busy to blog about it and find time today to say my piece.

But I can't stay quiet for a long time and here's what I've got to say..

To all the adults living in Singapore I am disgusted by you and I pity you at the same time. You don't own the world and you will not be forever young or live forever. You may be ruling this lifetime but when you reach a certain age that you can no longer walk and nobody is there to give you the love and care you need, remember what you did today.

To all the adults who are thinking the same here in the Philippines, I wondered what happened to you on your childhood or what corrupted your mind as an adult?

I know we all want to enjoy our expensive meal at a posh restaurant especially when we paid well for it.

I know we all want to enjoy the movie we paid in a cinema so we can enjoy good quality movie.

I know we all want to enjoy our day of pampering in our favorite nail salon, spa or parlor.

But, where is your humanity when you want to ban kids and keep them out of your sight. Kids are not pets to be left locked at home so the adults can enjoy the world on their own.

I know there are kids who are very mischievous and playful and its really annoying to get disrupted in a middle of the best scene of a movie your watching. Its very irritating to get bumped on by a kid who's running around when you are about to take a scoop on your scrumptious dessert.

Not all kids are like that, why generalize the ban?

I know the restaurants just want a steady income so they agreed to this, but can't they just dedicate a kids place the way they dedicate a smoking area in their restaurants?

Are smokers more important than kids to have their own place in the restaurant?

Something is very wrong here.

Kids are not always out on a weekday with their parents, their mom or dad or relatives. And sometimes there's nobody to cook for the kid so they opt dining out. Would you rather have the kids/family starve because you want your peace while having your meal?

I know there are parents who seem to don't give a damn when their kids are misbehaving, its their parenting technique, but its also a judgment call for a parent to leave a place when their kids are being too disruptive, some parents don't have the etiquette to think the world should understand them because they're are kids. But as adults to ban kids is just insane.

Kids are humans and have their basic rights. I would love to fight for kids for their rights. I would have understood if the ban will not extend to public places and that if the restaurants would be more humane to put up a kids area/family area the way they put up smoking areas.

As a mom I know where I can bring my child or not; some of the places I know I shouldn't bring my daughter especially with her age and case are the following:

a fine dinning restaurant (because there's a chance she will run away even before the 2nd course is served)
a non-family oriented restaurant
a non-family oriented movie
a nail spa and salon

To all the adults in Singapore, the world is not yours, you don't own the world, so don't be selfish not wanting it to share with the children.

I know there are adults who doesn't want to have kids of their own because 1) they don't want the responsibility or 2) they think they can't handle the responsibility, 3) they are enjoying their life without a kid that will interrupt their life ruining whatever plans they have for themselves.

Some countries in the world are having problems with their aging population. This was because when they were young and able they didn't want kids around. Now they are having problem because nobody wants kids and their aging . In short their future/ race is in danger because they hated children.

I hope this won't happen here in the Philippines and that other country won't follow such thing. Public places is that public and children are human too and have the basic rights as adults have.

Adults don't own the world and they will never live forever.

If you want to do someting that will benefit the greater population, ban cigarettes FOR GOOD! , ban the use plastic and non-biodegradable materials FOR GOOD!, ban drunkards on public places disrupting the peace FOR GOOD!

I wonder what will be the fine for those who violate the Singaporean law ? What if there are family of tourist in Singapore on a weekend enjoying their time in the Zoo and this popular theme park in there?

This is a stoopid law. I hope we won't follow suit.

Tang KiddiCine Film Festival Debuts Country’s Youngest Directors

Manila, Philippines -The Tang KiddiCine Film Festival culminated last November 27, with the debut of five films written, shot and created by the finalists chosen for this unique opportunity. Mia and Mika Azurin, ages 10 and 9, Ronn-Jeoff Beltran, 10, Luke Acosta, 8 and Kendrick Santos, 9, were part of history-in-the-making as they became five of the country’s youngest film directors through the Tang KiddiCine program.

In a desire to showcase children’s creativity, talent and independence in a manner never-before-seen, the Tang KiddiCine search challenged kids to show us the world through their own eyes. Just months ago, Tang and Kraft Foods Philippines set out to find the extraordinary kids who can do just this through 3-5 minute short films inspired by the theme “Because I Can”. All they had to do was write and send the stories that they wanted to make come alive on the big screen.

The response to our challenge? More than a hundred entries poured in from all over the Philippines- overwhelming evidence of the passion that fuels the ambitions of kids today. And proof that armed with a little support, a bit of guidance and a whole lot of imagination, kids can become the future faces of Philippine film at the first-ever Tang KiddiCine Film Festival.

“The Tang KiddiCine Film Festival was born out of our curiosity to see the world through the eyes of those who live with limitless possibilities,” says Cynthia Icasas, Beverage Category Manager of Kraft Foods Philippines. “Tang may be the brand that lent them this opportunity but in truth, we are the ones who borrow from their infinite imagination.”

Food preparation in itself may be difficult, but sometimes, it is more difficult to get children to eat the nutritious dishes prepared for them.

If only all children ate what their parents or guardians made for them, then there wouldn’t be any problem. In fact this is the case during a child’s first two years. But then one day, this same child who ate almost everything given to him or her starts rejecting food and saying “No.” The child gets more exposed to certain types of food; and after discovering the joys of sweets and hotdogs; he usually prefers these over healthier food options.

The same thing happens over and over again—and before you know it, your child has turned into a picky eater.

The term “picky eater” is one of the most frequently used terms by health professionals in characterizing the eating behavior of some children. In Filipino, these children are described as “mapili o maselan” when it comes to food.

Its most common identifiers are:

The child consumes a limited number or an inadequate variety of food, and/or exhibits strong food preferences;
The child is unwilling to try new food (food neophobia); and
The child eats slowly, lacks interest, and/or does not eat enough.

Food acceptance or rejection may be based on the qualities of food such as taste, texture, appearance, smell, or temperature. In extreme cases, there are even times when entire food groups are avoided!

The First-ever KiddiCine Film Festival Calls for Entries

ATTENTION MOMMIES! Tang’s search for the future faces of Philippine film starts today!

Tang calls on children aged seven to ten years old to send in their short stories that will be the basis of their film. They can draw a picture, take a photo and write up the best, most inventive and most creative ideas to capture the attention of the Screening Committee who will be judging entries based on Creativity, Originality and Adherence to the Theme. The theme for the First-ever KiddiCine Film Festival is "Because I Can”.

Short listed entries will be notified in person and the top five finalists who will receive the Tang Golden Ticket will get to attend a three-day KiddiCine Film Workshop. There, the finalists will be taught the basics of the craft under the mentorship of some of today’s most respected Advertising Directors.

In the sessions, they will be taught a short background on film, basic filming techniques and basic script-writing by no less than five well-known directors here in our local arena.

These directors include; Richard Ang, a film and television commercial director, who specializes in highly technical projects with edgy visual effects and computer graphics; Ianco Dela Cruz who started way back when he was a student, venturing to commercials, AVPs and forming a production company where he holds the Executive Producer position. There is also widely-respected and multi-awarded Erik Matti, known for being not just a film/ TV and advertising director but also for being a screen/story writer, producer and restaurateur; Erin Pascual who at an early age sought his talent for animation, special effects and as a motion graphics/ visual effects artist; Matthew Rosen who has been directing for over 25 years, winning national awards and awards globally with over 700 commercials, music videos and TV content under his belt and lastly; Christian Acuna who has been directing TV commercials and other advertising content for over two years and has vast success in directing short films.

If we were to see the world through the eyes of someone who knows no limit to possibility, would we see a different world from the one we live in now? Tang believes in celebrating kids’ creativity, their views and their work and with KiddiCine, welcomes the chance to see the world in their eyes.

In the Philippines, The WHO reports that 42% of Filipino women of reproductive age suffer from Anemia, while 44% of pregnant women suffer from the affliction. Sustagen Jr. And AlactaGrow Recall

The Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered a pull-out of Sustagen Jr. and AlactaGrow milk products in the market because of some technical compliance issues ergo the milk products by Mead Johnsons is said to be unsafe for public use.

The Philippine FDA asked for the recall and removal of its current supplies of Sustagen Jr. and AlactaGrow from distribution and sales because allegedly the fat content in the said products were below the new standard listed in the revised CODEX Standards for Follow-Up Formula.

"Paul Richards, President and General Manager of Mead Johnson Nutrition Philippines, responds by assuring consumers that "Safety is Mead Johnson's highest priority and the company spares no effort to comply with the laws of all of the countries in which it operates." He adds that "All of the company's products are produced in accordance with the CODEX Code of Hygenic Practice for Foods for Infants and Children".

By definition, the Class III Order issued by the Philippine FDA is the lowest level which is used for products that have technical compliance issues and the order specifically states that the use of or exposure to the product "is not likely to cause adverse health consequences".

Mead Johnson stressed that all of their products currently sold in the Philippines, including Alactagrow and Sustagen Junior, have passed stringent Philippine FDA health and safety requirements and are considered to be safe for consumption and of high quality. While the fat level requirement does not relate to the safety or quality of the product, Mead Johnson is taking steps to meet that requirement also.

Because of this , Mead Johnson launched today a reformulated version of Alactagrow that meets the new regulatory requirements. Work is also underway to develop an updated version of Sustagen to meet the revised standards.

Richards emphasized that Mead Johnson is committed to its mission to nourish the world’s children for the best start in life. Mead Johnson is involved in efforts to address malnutrition through a country-wide feeding and growth-monitoring program called Feeding Hope in partnership with Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the non-government organization Kabisig ng Kalahi. In addition, since 1991 Mead Johnson has provided sustained support to children afflicted with rare metabolic diseases.

Consumer health and collaboration with the government and the Food and Drug Administration are Mead Johnson’s top priorities. The company has been for some time and is currently in regular contact with the Philippine FDA regarding the recall and the Certificate of Product Registration (CPR) for the affected products."

Why Do I Want An Adtel Home Solar Kit

My mom has hyper tension and her normal blood pressure is 120/100 but every month my moms blood pressure would shoot to 200/180 and that is because of her Meralco bill.

For this month's billing statement her bill is Php3,700 plus which is kinda odd and too expensive for her regular consumption. She only uses TV when her soap operas are on, her fridge is on half the day mostly at night so she can have ice all day, she doesn't use air con because the house is well ventilated just a fan occasionally, and a desktop computer .

I together with six other mom bloggers were privileged to find out how popular over-the-counter medicine brands and vitamins we often use were made and I was definitely assured of the cleanliness and quality Unilab has put on every product.

We were taken for a tour at their manufacturing plant , the Amherst Plant in Laguna. (read more about the tour here) . Then we ate lunch at Conti's Nuvali branch and were given a relaxing whole body massage at the Indulgence Spa also in Nuvali.

First Week Of August Is Breastfeeding Week

From 1-7 August 2010, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), and breastfeeding
advocates in more than 170 countries worldwide will be celebrating World Breastfeeding Week for the 19th year with the theme “Breastfeeding: Just 10 Steps. The Baby-Friendly Way”.

Research shows that the best feeding option globally is the initiation of breastfeeding within the first half hour
of life, exclusive breastfeeding for a full six months and continued breastfeeding through the second year or
beyond. Breastfeeding improves short and long term maternal and child health; and thus contribute to the
attainment of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) 4: REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY and 5
IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH, to which many countries and agencies are committed.

UNICEF recently noted that the reduction of child deaths from 13 million globally in 1990 to 8.8 million in
20081 is partly due to the adoption of basic health interventions such as early and exclusive breastfeeding.
More and more studies have shown that implementation of the Ten Steps with continued postnatal support
contributes to increased breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding at the local, national and global
levels. 2,3,4 Today, an estimated 28% of all maternity facilities in the world have at some point implemented the Ten Steps which has contributed to an encouraging increase in breastfeeding rates despite aggressive commercial promotion of infant formula and feeding bottles.

However this is a far cry from the original goal of ALL maternity facilities practising the Ten Steps by
1995 as stated in the Innocenti Declaration (1990) on the protection, promotion and support of
breastfeeding which had outlined what countries should do to support breastfeeding.

In 2005, fifteen years after the original Innocenti Declaration, the Innocenti+15 Declaration had called
upon individuals, health care professionals, communities, governments and multilateral, bilateral
organisations and international financial institutions to ensure that all women can succeed in
breastfeeding.

In 2007, UNICEF and WHO completed an update and revision of the Baby-Friendly materials which
acknowledge new research and experience, and suggest new approaches to Baby-Friendly beyond the
maternity hospital in other health settings and in the community.

Action at community level is particularly important since globally only 56% of women deliver their
babies in a health facility, (only 33% in the least developed countries) and they may be discharged
within a day or two. Women need ongoing support in the community whether they deliver in hospital or
at home.

Whilst rates of exclusive breastfeeding have increased in many countries, there has been stagnation or
decrease in some, partly because reduced political support for BFHI and poor compliance with the Ten
Steps in BFHI certified facilities.

Recent studies have shown that with more of the Ten Steps in place, the more likely women are to
achieve their breastfeeding goals.5 This confirms that importance for every maternity, hospital, clinic
and community to strive to increase the number of steps in place, even if they cannot achieve all ten
steps immediately. Therefore every step counts!

All About Autism

As you all know I have a daughter with autism. After accepting her condition (knowing about her condition was different from accepting it) I have attended several seminars and been doing a lot of readings about this condition. I have a personal blog that talks about Surviving Autism and you might want to read it so just you know more how we are coping. Meanwhile I am here to share some useful information about the condition.

What it autism?
Autism is a spectrum disorder of the brain that affects a child's behavior, communication and social skills. It includes three of five disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDDs), these are Autistic Disorder (ASD), Asperger's Syndrome and PDD-not otherwide specified (PDD-NOS). Latest of the data I've gathered worldwide there is now 1 out of 66 children born with autism and is more common on boys than girls. So my daughter's condition is one of the rare types.

How will you know if your child has autism?
If you notice your child has difficulty communicating, socializing and there are presence of repetitive and ritualistic behaviors its safe to assume that there is something different with the child. You should immediately see a doctor for diagnosis as no two children are the same when it comes with ASD. Individuals have varying symptoms with varying severity.

What are the available treatment options?
Autism Spectrum Disorders are lifelong conditions with no known cure as of the moment. However, children with ASD can progress developmentally and learn new skills. Some children may improve so much that they no longer meet the criteria for ASD although milder symptoms may often persist.

Depending on the needs of the child there are different evidence-based interventions that have been proven effective for the management of the different deficits in autism. These services include:

occupational therapy (OT)
speech therapy
behavioral therapy
educational therapy
and physical therapy

Early intervention is critical in the management of these children. Studies have shown that early detection of symptoms and early intervention improves the later outcomes of these individuals in terms of language, social relatedness and behavior.

For diagnosis the best place you can visit is the Philippine Children's Medical Hospital (PCMC) at Agham Road Quezon City. PCMC is a specialized hospital for children and they can refer you to several specialist for this condition although getting a schedule from a developmental physician may take awhile because there are only a few of them practicing in the country at the moment.

You can also visit The Medical City (TMC) they have this Center For Patient Partnership Center for Developmental Pediatrics that takes diagnosis by appointment. They have a a team of competent developmental pediatricians, neurologist, neuropsycholgist and other medical specialist. TMC also offers different paramedical services like occupational therapy and speech therapy. You can call them at (632) 6356789 ext 6444

Beware Of Infant Obesity

If most Filipinos were asked to describe what a healthy five-month old baby looks like, chances are they would depict an infant that was chubby, rosy-cheeked, glowing, and slightly bigger or taller than other infants. Simply put, it’s a pleasantly plump baby that looks like a character in a Fernando Botero painting.

Although slightly plump babies may look cuter or more robust than “slimmer” infants, the truth is they are over-nourished or overfed than they should be. They are also more prone to diseases and ailments later in life.

In a talk given by London-based pediatric nutritionist and pediatrician Dr. Atul Singhal at the Panay Ballroom of the Hotel Sofitel in Manila, he explained that the amount and quality of sustenance given to babies from zero to six months “programs” their overall health. “How you feed baby prior to weaning has a permanent and long-term effect on health. In the past, bigger was considered better. Our problem is, we are forcing babies to grow faster than the norm,” said Singhal.

By feeding babies too much or too often, infants tend to gain weight faster and grow faster than what is considered normal by the World Health Organization. Babies need a slower or more natural pattern of growth to ensure optimal brain development.

Aside from these, overfeeding also leads to infant obesity. In the National Nutrition Survey cited by Dr. Fil Gatcheco, president of the Philippine Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, he noted that obesity cases in children from zero to five years old jumped from 0.6% to 2%. Although this growth was smaller than Western and Asian counterparts, it was still alarming.

To ensure that babies have a normal growth pattern, Dr. Singhal said that infants had to be fed the right kind and amount of protein particularly, alpha protein or alpha-lactalbumin. Alpha-protein is an important nutritional protein that decreases gastro-intestinal problems like vomiting, spitting up, regurgitation, or food intolerance. It helps improve the absorption of essential minerals like zinc and offers less stress to the kidneys.

He further stated that randomized trials conducted overseas on 128 infants showed that babies who were given alpha-lactalbumin had lesser gastro-intestinal problems.

Aside from decreasing the incidence of gastro-intestinal problems in babies, alpha protein also enhances the disposition of babies. Since it contains helpful amino acids with tryptophan, babies have better sleep patterns, appetites and in effect, have better moods. Children who are fed alpha protein are healthier and stand to have more enduring health benefits.

What and how often you feed your baby will dictate how healthy and strong he or she will be decades from now. If parents (and grand parents) learn to accept the fact that roly-poly doesn’t necessarily mean healthy, then this generation of babies may stand a better chance against cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetesand insulin resistance in the future.

Passport Application Requirement For Single Parents

Yesterday, I went to inquire about renewing my passport and my daughters and I was stumped knowing some degrading requirements needed for new passport applications because of the new system.

I think it was good that the travel agency staff I was talking to had listening disability as she informed me something I never knew before, that for a new passport application for a minor (age 0-17) of a child of a single parent or unwed mother would need to secure a Certificate of Illegitimacy from the National Statistics Office aside from acquiring a Certificate of No Marriage for the parent, Birth Certificate and Baptismal Certificate for the child.

This requirement is very discriminatory and should be removed from passport applications as nobody wanted to be branded as illegitimate. Aside from the fact that what good does this document serve the government but an additional fee and trauma to the parent and child for having such a label with certificate given to him.

I hope this was just a fluke that the government overlooked and soon as in hopefully now they will remove this requirement for passport applications as it is very degrading and discriminatory.

In case the government ignores this then I suggest to all single parents or unwed mothers to get a passport for their child while they are below 8 so they would not have to secure a certificate of illegitimacy for their passport application and renewal in the future.

Dear Friends and Mommies

Johnson’s Baby and World Vision have partnered to come out with a different kind of Mother’s Day celebration this year. Titled "Baby Your Mom Day", the campaign aims to create the longest online Mother's Day greeting using videos and photos submitted by users. And for every submission Johnson's Baby will donate P50 to World Vision to help send underprivileged children to school.

Here’s how:
1. Like Baby Your Mom Day Facebook Fan Page (see link here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/BabyYourMomDay/118855128141367)
2. Upload your photo/video greeting
3. Each online submission will be merit a P50 donation on your behalf to World Vision to help send underprivileged children to school

Deadline of submission is on 7th May 2010.

RainbowBrush is a water based marker made to encourage kids to draw and tap in to their creative side. More info about the RainbowBrush can be found here.

Starting May 1, 2010 at 2-5PM RainbowBrush will hold a drawing contest for kids age 5-13. The contest is open every Saturdays and Sundays of May 2010 at Toy Kingdom in SM Megamall. There will be three age group categories with specific themes:
5-7 years old will do the Mother’s Day Greeting Card Theme
8-10 years old will do the Beach Experience Theme
11-13 years old will do Anything Wildlife
Each category has three winners and will receive an Alphabeth Edition of Rainbow Brush worth more than Php1,600.
